i’ve always loved sci-fi in a neo-victorian setting, but never quite knew the term for this genre. only today did i find out the correct classification for this: Steampunk. (I’ve come across this term in the past, but somehow always related it back to a japanese animation reference) As explained by Flavorwire “steampunk as it exists today is a cultural trend that takes stylistic cues from the Victorian era, but adds steam-power-based technological updates.”

i went OH the moment i read that, and many things fell into place in my world.

Steampunk:

• Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow
• Caprica (ok, this series has all the shiny metal robots of battlestar galactica, so its technology isn’t really steam-driven, but it has enough nostalgia-tinged 19050s styling to classify as steampunk in my book)
• Perdido Street Station by China Mieville (this is seriously disturbing for me)
• His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman
• and The Golden Compass (Movie based on his first book)
• The Prestige
• A Series of Unfortunate Events
• The League of Extraordinary Gentleman
• The Coldfire Trilogy by CS Friedman (I’m not sure if this can be called steampunk? but it is fantasy mixed with sci fi…)

I’m sure I have more on my list that I haven’t recalled yet. The above is proof enough that this is definitely a genre i like.
